Executive Order Issued Today Restricts New Regulations

By Randi Morrison posted 01-30-2017 05:14 PM

The President signed this regulatory reduction-focused Executive Order today that - among other things - requires executive departments or agencies to identify at least two existing regulations for repeal whenever they propose for notice and comment or promulgate a new regulation, and generally bars any additional incremental cost associated with new regulations during fiscal 2017.

Regulations issued with respect to the military, national security, or foreign affairs are exempt and, as is the case with the recently imposed regulatory freeze (see last week's Society Alert), the Order does not apply to independent agencies such as the SEC, as confirmed by Allen Matkins Partner and Society member Keith Bishop's post and Reuters.
