President Announces New Office of American Innovation

Yesterday, as anticipated,  President Trump announced a "White House Office of American Innovation" (OAI). The new office, which will be led by the President's son-in-law and Senior Advisor Jared Kushner, will reportedly make recommendations to the President that are developed in collaboration with internal and external authorities and experts "on policies and plans that improve Government operations and services, improve the quality of life for Americans now and in the future, and spur job creation."

The OAI reflects the formalization of efforts already underway to meet with and gather information from private sector CEOs, academics and other "thought leaders" on government and regulatory reform, economic growth, and related broad campaign promises and initiatives. Internal staff OAI members reportedly include Director of National Economic Council Gary Cohn; Assistant to the President for Strategic Initiatives Chris Liddell; Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental and Technology Initiatives Reed Cordish; Senior Counselor to the President for Economic Initiatives and Deputy National Security Adviser Dina Powell; and Director of the Domestic Policy Council Andrew Bremberg.

The release notes:

"OAI will create task forces to focus on initiatives such as modernizing Government services and information technology, improving services to veterans, creating transformational infrastructure projects, implementing regulatory and process reforms, creating manufacturing jobs, addressing the drug and opioid epidemic, and developing 'workforce of the future' programs."
