Oil & Gas Company Sues Greenpeace and Others for Misinformation Campaign

On Tuesday, Dallas-based oil and gas company Energy Transfer Partners (NYSE: ETP), among the largest pipeline companies in the US, announced its filing of a federal suit in the US District Court of North Dakota against Greenpeace and other environmental organizations and individuals alleging - among other things - that they "manufactured and disseminated materially false and misleading information about Energy Transfer and the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) for the purpose of fraudulently inducing donations, interfering with pipeline construction activities and damaging Energy Transfer’s critical business and financial relationships.” The release asserts that the activist group is "comprised of rogue environmental groups and militant individuals who employ a pattern of criminal activity and a campaign of misinformation for purposes of increasing donations and advancing their political or business agendas."

According to the The Washington Post, Greenpeace GC defended its activism - accusing the company's lawyers, Kasowitz, Benson & Torres - "of being 'corporate mercenaries willing to abuse the legal system to silence legitimate advocacy work.'" The firm's founder is said to be President Trump’s long-standing lawyer.

North American Shale reports that the suit seeks compensatory damages in an amount to be determined at trial, as well as treble and punitive damages.
